Pond salt is a great natural product for the health of your pond fish. It has many great qualities:
*All Natural
*Improves the slime coat and gill function of your fish
*Deters 7 out of 9 parasites at the right dosage
*Can be easily measured with a salt meter
*Fairly inexpensive
*Helps deter algae growth
*Helps detoxify fish with nitrite poisoning
*Will not harm your biological filtration
*Adds essential electrolytes
We typically use 1 cup per 100 gallons of water into a pond with plants, up to 2 cups per 100 gallons depending on the type of plants we have. I stay below 0.20 on my KoiMedic meter. If I have no plants I can go up to 3 cups per 100 gallons. Staying below 0.30 on my KoiMedic meter. Please remember salt does not evaporate like water so unless you have a leak just add water and de-chlorinator not salt when topping off your pond. Use a salinity meter made for freshwater to test your salt level.
If I have a sick fish, pond salt is my first line of defense. I use approximately 5 pounds of salt per 100 gallons getting my level to 0.50 on my KoiMedic Meter. I leave the fish at that level in a quarantine tank for at least a week.
Not everyone believes in pond salt but we have used it for 16 years in our show pond and have never had a fish get sick. I especially make sure I have a good salt level going into winter so my pets can have a strong slime coat and healthy gills. Just remember pond salt is not table salt!!
HAPPY PONDING!! 🙂
